Are you prepared to recover from a disastrous loss of a server/network? Are you doing all you can in terms of prevention of the same? If you are like many of the companies that we’ve been called out to help over the years, your answer to these questions is probably - “Yes”. But, if your situation is anything like many of those that we’ve helped; the answer “after the fact” is actually - “NO”.

Consider these real-life examples:
  • A non-profit residential services firm’s network server was not accessible and no longer responding, leaving them unable to perform work essential to their operations. Upon our arrival we quickly discovered and “quarantined” over 200 viruses on the suspect server, the reason for its inability to function. The server had current antivirus software with current definitions, but it had never been scanned for viruses.

  • A sports training company’s email server had a hardware failure that corrupted its important data (the user inboxes and messages) rendering the system inaccessible and the company without email functionality. Unfortunately, we discovered their last successful backup of this data was almost a month old. Working over the span of a weekend, we were able to repair the database and recover nearly all of their mail, but the repair cost much more than it would have if they had a recent backup and we had been able to do a restore from tape.

  • An insurance agency had a power failure overnight and their main server was improperly shutdown, causing serious damage to its operating system; effectively making the server inoperable. Fortunately, they had a recent successful backup and we were able to recover the server and all of their data. However, they could have avoided the problem and expense altogether if they had only properly configured the power management software that came with the battery backup unit they installed.
All three of these organizations were aware of the importance of things like data backups, power and virus protection. Yet, all three suffered a serious disruption in server/network access that resulted in downtime and a significant expense to restore them to “business as usual”. In all three cases, a simple checkup ahead of time could have prevented their problems or enabled a much quicker and less costly repair.
